bloggish protocol
Just wondering this morning as I read the posts of others in various blogs, whether or not it is proper? preferred? mandatory? expected? for the blogger to insert comments among the comments of the readers? Is there a blog protocol? (And is it okay to still hate that word ~ blog ~ after 18 months of writing in one?)
I find that I appreciate the blogger's comments mixed in among the others, but it seems that might lend itself to some problems. One of my heroes, Joe.My.God., only occasionally chimes into clarify or make note of additional information.
I feel so graced by the wise and witty folks who leave comments here. It seems a travesty to not jump in and say thanks or never thought of that or great idea. I am perplexed. What do y'all think?

We're guests in your bandwidth. You are a host who knows from.
Your blog, your style!
Some do some don't, but it usually is to clarify a question or a misunderstanding, though Gay Prof always does, and I like it. So Lynette, if you want to, just do it.!
I'm new to this myself. Sometimes I do, sometimes I don't. I think for me it just depends on the comment or if someone is asking a question. Dunno really.
Some do, some don't. Some will respond to several reader comments in one comment of their own and reply to the posters in a list (ie "steve: blah blah, Tom: blah, blah). It's totally up to the author to determine if they want to respond. Though some interesting conversations can spring up in the comment section.
I absolutely think you should leave comments on your blog if you want to. It's sort of like being able to engage in a conversation with your friends as they respond to something you've said. I think it's great fun.
Funny you should post this question! I just started to respond to comments on mine, because it felt like right thing to do. I am torn between leaving it up to the reader to fill in the dialogue if they like an entry (like our blogdaddy Joe) or checking in and talking back. I guess I'm gonna play it by ear. Don't know if there is a protocal or not...
I like to respond to my comments and I'm always interested to see if the blogger has responded to mine, although I was getting a bit nutty about it for a while, so now I only do it if I have time and am so moved. I say, make your own protocol!

Personally, I leave comments on my blog in response to comments and I cross over to other people's blogs and comment on their comments at my blog and their comments on my comments on their comments -- basically its a gabfest with no rules. Speaking of which, I'm glad you came over to my blog and I'm really glad you liked the Christopher Dawson reference (from The Narcissistic American btw). I've really enjoyed your blog also. :)
I've been commenting on the comments in the next day's post ... but I love reading blogs where the comment conversation is a back-and-forth gabfest.
Love your "wrinkle" post. I was nine the first time I read GWTW. Loved it then, love it still!
As others have said, its your blog, your party, your rules. I will comment back ocassionally on my blog, and would probably do so more, if I had more readers and more comment activity, as I state in my blog I WANT to have a dialog.
Do what ever you are comfortable with.
I always welcome a new commentor, thanking them for stopping by. Or if there is a debate I've sparked, I jump right in. But the best bit of advice I read is to just go to your commentator's blog and leave a comment to one of their posts. And if I love their blog, as I do yours, then I link theirs to mine.
such wisdom. i knew y'all would help out here. thanks for clarifying this . . .
Up to you. I don't usually, simply because it inflates the number of comments and I'd rather have the number only reflect the responses of my readers. But sometimes, I just have to clarify or respond.
