how do we stop this insanity?

There must be a way. This is criminal: The Army is Ordering Injured Troops to Iraq from Salon.

"As the military scrambles to pour more soldiers into Iraq, a unit of the Army's 3rd Infantry Division at Fort Benning, Ga., is deploying troops with serious injuries and other medical problems, including GIs who doctors have said are medically unfit for battle. Some are too injured to wear their body armor, according to medical records."

I can't even begin... I really can't. So much for our democratic saviors that we voted in to start cleaning house. Why are Bush and Cheney still in office? The next right wing nut case that starts going on at me about supporting our troops, gets a knuckle sandwich.

Lynette,

Perhaps the way to stop it is with the Draft. The Draft would be the ultimate equalizer in this situation. If George Bush were ordering his daughters to war, A) There probably wouldn't be one, and B) It would only be as a last resort. George and the majority of the ruling aristocracy have to make no personal sacrifice. If that were changed with mandatory national service and conscription, we would never have invaded Iraq in the first place.

I hate war, and the last thing I would want to do is send a loved one into harm's way. The only way we can gaurantee that these douchebags won't send our kids, is to put theirs in equal danger. I'm tired and don't know if I'm making sense, but the only way anyone in Congress or the Executive Branch will vote to change these inequalities of sacrifice, is when they begin to experience empathy. They can talk the talk all they like, but unless their kid's lives are on the line, they just can't walk the walk.

Tater, I have an 18 year old son and I would sell everything I own before I would let him go over there for an invasion that this administration has dragged us into. I feel so sorry for those dedicated troops and I'm fed up with Ditto heads who want to tell me that if I don't support the war, then I don't support the troops. What a crock of shit. These kids deserve to come home, not be re-deployed two and three times. They come home so damaged both physically and psychologically, and are expected to just merge back into society. It's shameful that we are sending these lambs to the slaughter. 2008 can't come fast enough for me. Oh, and Belle, nice job, keep it up girl!!

Therese,

I am not advocating sending anyone else to this civil war, and am totally for bringing them all home NOW! My response was directed more towards the underlying reason the assholes in Washington are so breezily sending our children to die. They are not sharing the dread of loss, or the permanant physical or mental damage of a loved one. For them the concept of loss is only theoretical. If All our children were required to do two years of service for their country, and not just the downtrodden and poor, that hope to go on to college, or help their families out of poverty, we wouldn't be in the situation we are in today. I believe we would have made use of diplomacy instead of invasion as a tool for change in the region. If Jenna and Barbie were serving their country, Asshole would have used every ounce of effort in negotiations. He wouldn't have been strutting around like a state fair, prize winning, jackass on some aircraft carrier, in a uniform he has never once honored.

i agree, tater. i think it would give these yahoos pause to think their own children might be in the way.

we never should have gone to iraq. i'm still not completely clear on why we did (the truth, anyway). i suspect it has to do with oil and corporate interests and bush II's wish for vengeance or to make a name or some kind of bullshit.

but mandatory military service for every individual would give some pause to these bastards who blithely send other peoples' kids off to war.

I totally agree with Tater. None of those jerks on the Hill have put their children in harm's way. They hide behind a cloak of National Security to justify their actions. Bull Shit. It is the poor who are laying down their lives for us. The rich generally don't join the army: They are drafted.

This is so horrible. As if not taking care of the injured, i.e Walter Reed, isn't enough. These bastards have to send injured men back. I agree with the draft idea as well. Not just to make Congress think but the generally apathetic American who can so easily focus on shopping instead of this illegal war. This administration must be stopped at all costs.
