L. F. Eason III, american hero
It's easy to forget what principle and conviction and honor look like, but this man reminds me. Mr. Eason, an employee of North Carolina's Agriculture Department, refused to fly the flag at half mast after the death of avowed racist and bigot Jesse Helms. In return, he was forced to take early retirement from a job he loved.
My hero of the day, L. F. Eason III. If only we had public financing for elections, this man could take his courage to Washington and take on the lowlife scum oozing all over that city.
Update: NPR interviewed Mr. Eason; you can listen here. Predictably, he's had a death threat ~ "thinly veiled" ~ via newspaper comments responding to one of the articles. Otherwise, he reported that people have been very supportive. Could there be hope for us?

I googled him and got this blog.
kass ~ i wish! i thought the newspaper might have a comments section, no luck. maybe someone on the 'net will find some more info on him. i imagine he's heartbroken. maybe it would help for him to know he's a hero to many of us.
CounterPunch today had a great obit titled "Helms Finally Does the Right Thing." Makes a real case for the bastard he was. Hope Eason sees it.
There are lots of us out there supporting Eason's position on this.

Hey Kass ~ Thanks !! I read comments somewhere that said "The man clanks when he walks, balls of steel." I would love for him to know that there are probably millions out here who think he's a grand human being and an exemplary American.
I am a Tar Heel native who left my glorious state because of the idiot Helms, thank you L F. Eason for having the courage to resist the urge to participate in not lowering the flag for this substandard mumbling bigot creature, who lived below the standards of normal North Carolinians.

L.F. Eason III, I salute you. It took guts, that's for sure. Your folks must've done something right, and I for one am proud of you and wish you well. In this day and age such courage and strength to do what's right is rare. You cast a giant shadow.

Might be worthwhile to give him an idea of how many people support Eason's decision.
Helms was an embarrassment to the entire state- and not as beloved as the spin would have it. My dear sweet ladylike grandma would actually quite literally hiss whenever he came on the news.
I was mildly shocked when he died actually, I always figured he really was too damn mean and full of spite to ever actually finally die.
Oops, got so focused on my own distaste there I forgot to actually comment! Mr. Eason, really is a hero!! And while it won't help, his boss will be getting an (email) earful from this former Tarheel..
Bravo and within this nugget of a story lies the solution. It will take retired state employees to expose and fight the stench coming up from the sewage of bureaucracy.

Helms was a piece of shit. Eason is a true patriot. I am putting this up at Sirens Belle, its a wonderful post about a truly wonderful human being. Thank you for writing about him.
